Housed in the Royal Street Inn (a fancy name for a bar with a couple of rooms to rent), the R Bar sports a particularly unique blend of low- key sophistication and bohemian- grunge bonhomie. It's a popular attraction for Marigny residents, Frenchmen Street stragglers, smug see- and- be- seen slummers, the occasional rock star and locals.

The R Bar boasts one of the most agreeable vibes in town- - almost an anti- vibe, really. This is an offbeat, happening little establishment in a residential neighborhood with plenty of street parking and regular police patrols. It's loose but not disorganized, and there couldn't be a better choice for laid- back travelers.

Breakfast isn't served, but the inn still bills itself as a B&B. That's because here B&B stands for bed- and- beverage - - the lobby is the highly enjoyable R Bar. You check in with the bartender, and as a guest, you get two complimentary cocktails.
