Incorporated in 1970, the festival is a non- profit, public foundation dedicated to furthering an understanding of art and music from all cultures of the world.
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is an annual event which fosters everyone to explore the interactive exhibition components, all the while learning about the people, the cultures, music and arts.
A community board of directors consisting of 30 members governs the organization. The board of directors uses the surplus funds from the yearly Festival to support music and arts education, a community radio station, local entrepreneurs and a wide variety of cultural programming. These activities in turn feed the creative spirit the Festival.
300,000 people attended the Heritage Fair, evening concerts, and workshops. The 1989 Festival marked the 20th annual event, which was commemorated with a classic poster featuring Fats Domino, ushering in an era during which the poster would celebrate many of Louisiana's music legends with iconic portraits
Jazz Fest has received many honors, including being named the Festival of the Year four times by Pollstar magazine.
