Parodies

On January 8, 1815, a real battle was fought which was later called The Battle of New Orleans. A history buff and school principal named Jimmy Driftwood later became a recording artist and one of his musical works was called The Battle of New Orleans. The Battle of New Orleans turned out to be a hit historical song, and inspired other musicians to create parodies of the original tune. Some parodies of The Battle of New Orleans are called The Battle of Kookamonga, The White House Burned (The War of 1812), and The Ballad of Hank Williams. The Calgary Flames are the National Hockey League team which most often plays the original song that is The Battle of New Orleans during their hockey home games.

Calgary Flames

Anyone who follows professional ice hockey closely might be acquainted with the Calgary Flames. This men’s team plays for Calgary in Alberta, Canada under the Western Conference’s Northwest Division in the NHL (or National Hockey League.) The Calgary Flames first became Stanley Cup champions in 1989. There is another team that plays for Alberta – the Edmonton Oilers – who are considered close rivals of the Calgary Flames. The Battle of New Orleans is the song usually played during home games of the Calgary Flames even though The Battle of New Orleans in 1812 never reached Canada or Atlanta (where the Flames team was originally formed.) The nonprofit foundation of the Calgary Flames (called The Flames Foundation) actively supports charitable causes in Alberta, with donations having reached more than $29 million already.
